The “SHERPA” E is a sustainable and future-oriented fully electric baggage tractor that SUNCAR developed with Goldhofer – based on state-of-the-art technology proven in the automotive industry. The fully electric baggage and cargo tractor is the first of its kind: It looks like its conventional diesel counterparts, features the same three cabin variants and the same high driver comfort and safety as the regular “SHERPA” models – and offers much more beyond that, especially when it comes to sustainability and significant cost savings.
Project Objectives
The objective of SUNCAR’s project was to develop a fully electric baggage and cargo tractor with innovative 400 V technology for small airports specializing in private jet handling. The key requirement was a flexibly deployable unit – safe and reliable in all functions.
For this reason, the “SHERPA” was developed not only to be used as a cargo tractor, but also to move aircraft up to 50 t MTOW.
Results
- The innovative “IonMaster” technology enables 80% battery accessibility within one hour of charging time – without a special charging station.
- Functions under all temperature conditions from -25°C to +50°C
- Offers the same towing performance, flexibility, safety, and comfort as the “SHERPA” D models
- Provides 360° visibility for operators, as the complete electrical system is mounted at the front and the rear coupling is remotely controlled
- Enables conversion from “SHERPA” D to “SHERPA” E through a common vehicle platform for all powertrains
The prototype development was successful, so that today more than 10 “SHERPA” E units are in operation.
