SUNCAR developed the world’s first battery-powered large rotary drilling rig, the “LB 16 unplugged,” in collaboration with LIEBHERR. The LB 16 unplugged is the electric version of the LB 16 large rotary drilling rig, which is already established in the product portfolio and powered by an internal combustion engine. The new electric-drive deep foundation machine is battery-operated and therefore cordless. The LB 16 unplugged has no restrictions in performance or application compared to the conventional LB 16 version. Thanks to a battery life of ten hours, the 55-ton electro-hydraulic rotary drilling rig can easily be used throughout an entire workday. The battery can then be fully recharged overnight within seven hours.
The advantages of the LB 16 unplugged are clear: it produces no local emissions and significantly less noise. Consequently, the electric rotary drilling rig can be used in areas with strict emission limits as well as in noise-sensitive zones.
Project Goals
- Develop an electric drive solution for the LB 16 type construction machine manufactured by Liebherr.
- Supply components for the production of the prototype (LB 16 unplugged).
- Build the prototype with the help of Liebherr employees in time for bauma.
- Manage real construction site operations with the machine.
Results
- First engine start of the LB 16 unplugged shortly before Christmas 2018.
- Successful presentation of the LB 16 unplugged at bauma in Munich.
- Successfully completed operation at the construction site in Bürs.
