Electric excavator TB260E

With the TB260E, SUNCAR is expanding its range of electric excavators in the 6-ton compact excavator series.

With the TB260E, SUNCAR is setting new benchmarks in battery-powered excavators. At the same time, the familiar Huppenkothen characteristics—performance, reliability, efficiency, and operator comfort—are fully retained.

Project objectives

The objective of this project was to develop and implement an electric 7 t excavator. A Takeuchi TB260 chassis was used for the project and retrofitted with suitable components to enable the electric excavator. These include the battery, electric drive, charging solutions, and other components required for electrification. A morphological analysis of various implementation options was carried out and the most suitable solution was selected.

The main development work consisted of the complete design of the TB260E, including component analysis and calculations for various design elements. In addition, the thermal management system for use in Central Europe was calculated and designed. The electrical circuitry for the traction battery and the excavator also had to be developed.

In a further step, the design elements were implemented by moving into production, turning data into real components. A test bench was set up using parts from production and additional ordered components, allowing the system to be parameterized, commissioned, and tested before installation.

After the successful test phase, the system was installed on the construction machine and commissioned. The TB260E has since entered series production, and 8 machines are currently in operation.

Results

Zero-emission electric drive

The TB260E is driven by an efficient synchronous motor. Thanks to its emission-free operation, the electric excavator is ideally suited for work in enclosed spaces or in areas where the use of internal combustion engine machines is legally restricted.

Charging & cable operation

The mains connection during battery charging as well as in cable operation is via a standard 400 V / CEE63 plug. With a suitable adapter cable, smaller sockets can also be used. The internally installed chargers provide a charging power of 44 kW. This allows the excavator to be charged in 3 hours. When digging, the excavator’s runtime in battery mode is 6 hours or more. If the excavator is recharged for one hour at midday, the daily runtime increases to 8 hours or more. Additional cable operation ensures the ability to work around the clock. Full power is available to the excavator in both operating modes.

Hydraulic system

With its four control circuits, the TB260E offers optimal compatibility with a wide range of attachments. A flow rate of 100 l/min is available on the 1st control circuit, meaning that attaching a stump grinder or a flail mower poses no problems. In addition, three circuits are proportionally controlled, enabling precise operation and fast work. The proven Powertilt swivel device with hydraulic quick coupler completes the wide range of application options.

Maintenance

The battery and electric motor are maintenance-free and have a long service life. As the usual maintenance work on the diesel engine is eliminated, service effort can be significantly reduced. The hydraulic system is maintained as usual.

Easy operation

The newly installed control display features intuitive menu navigation, provides a wide range of information about the machine’s status, and allows various excavator functions to be switched.
