SUNCAR presents new 6-ton electric excavators with higher battery capacity

Schlieren, June 26, 2024 – The Swiss electric construction machinery specialist SUNCAR is launching a new generation of electric excavators in the 6-ton class. The predecessor models have already proven themselves in practical use for six years. Design, performance, and operation have been optimized for the new development platform. The new construction machines will be delivered starting in the second quarter of 2024.

In doing so, we are keeping pace with rising demand and tapping into the significant economic and ecological savings potential for construction sites in cities and enclosed spaces,” says Stefan Schneider, Managing Director of SUNCAR.

Higher charging power and longer operating time

During the development process of the e-excavators, SUNCAR further developed the energy storage system. The battery capacity is now 126 kWh. In combination with the high-torque axial flux motor, the capacity is sufficient for typical operation during a full working day.

The battery storage systems are supplied by KREISEL Electric GmbH, based in Austria. The partner company manufactures highly efficient and safe battery systems for the off-highway sector. A new dielectric cooling fluid that flows directly around the battery cells ensures optimal conditioning and safe operation. Furthermore, it impresses with its high environmental compatibility.

The DC charging interface of the e-excavators allows for charging power of up to 100 kW. This enables the batteries to be charged from 20 to 80% State of Charge in around 50 minutes. With alternating current (AC), charging power of 22 kW or optionally 44 kW is possible. For stationary use, the excavator can be connected to a conventional industrial socket via a supplied cable.

An integrated, bidirectional heat pump is connected to three separate cooling circuits for the battery, power electronics, and cabin. The system can heat or cool the batteries and the cabin, making excavator operation possible even under harsh environmental conditions. The heat pump provides additional user comfort and optimal operating conditions with lower energy requirements.

Advanced safety and monitoring systems offer real-time monitoring

Like all machines developed by SUNCAR, the new generation of excavators is equipped with the INSIGHT Remote System. This allows operating and consumption data to be monitored in real time. A map view also shows the current locations of the construction machinery. For service, this is the most important tool for enabling seamless customer support worldwide, whether through remote troubleshooting, software updates, or parameter adjustments.

Retrofitting MOVASYST, SUNCAR’s excavator assistance system, is possible at any time: separate power supplies and a 12 V connection on the boom are already integrated. MOVASYST allows machine movements to be automated, which increases precision, productivity, and thus the efficiency of the construction machinery in use. It is also possible to limit lifting and slewing movements and to visualize the excavator bucket from various perspectives.

The machines of SUNCAR’s latest e-excavator generation also feature a plug for automatic release in the event of mechanical overload of the cable, as well as intelligent safety and warning notices for safe operation.
