LIEBHERR LR 1250.1 unplugged

In 2020, SUNCAR, together with Liebherr, presented the world’s first battery-powered crawler crane: the LR 1250.1 unplugged.

Objective

In 2020, Liebherr presented the LR 1250.1 unplugged, the world’s first battery-powered crawler crane, driven by an electric motor with a system output of 255 kilowatts.

Project objectives

SUNCAR was involved in the electrification of the crawler crane and the key associated aspects:

Development:

  • System design
  • Support for software development
  • HVDU development
  • Support for mechanical design
  • Project management

Commissioning:

  • Support for tests on the component test bench
  • Support during commissioning
  • Support during machine assembly
  • Eurofins expertise

Material supply:

As part of quotation 20191111-LR1104-Material, several components for the electrification of the two crawler cranes were sold and delivered
to the Liebherr plant in Nenzing.
The actual delivery was continuously adjusted over the course of the project.

Results

The Liebherr LR 1200.1 unplugged is the world’s first battery-powered crawler crane. It is driven by an electric motor with a system output of 255 kilowatts.
Compared to conventional versions, there are no compromises in terms of performance and availability. The LR 1250.1 has a maximum lifting capacity of 250 tonnes and achieves the best possible combination of operator benefits, efficiency, and environmental compatibility.
The new machine is emission-free and has a very low noise level—an important advantage in noise-sensitive areas and for the people working on the construction site.
The crane can be recharged from a standard site power supply (32 A, 63 A) in 4.5 hours, and optionally with 125 A in 2.25 hours. The battery capacity is designed for 4 hours of lifting operation. As the name suggests, the crane can be operated without cables thanks to the battery-electric drive.
