With the TB216E, SUNCAR is setting new benchmarks in battery-powered excavators. At the same time, the familiar Huppenkothen features such as performance, reliability, efficiency and operator-friendliness are fully retained.
Project objectives
The objective of this project was the development and implementation of an electric 2 t excavator. For the project, a Takeuchi TB216 chassis was used and retrofitted with suitable components that enable the conversion to an electric excavator. These include battery, electric drive and charging solutions, as well as other components required for electrification. A morphological analysis of various implementation options was carried out and the most suitable solution was selected.
The main development work consisted of the complete design of the TB216E, including component analysis and calculations for various design elements. In addition, the thermal management for use in Central Europe was calculated and designed. The electrical circuitry for the traction battery and the excavator also had to be developed.
In a further step, the design elements were implemented by being transferred to production, turning data into real components. Using parts from production and additional component orders, a test bench was set up where the system could be parameterised, commissioned and tested before installation.
After the successful test phase, the system was installed on the construction machine and commissioned. The TB216E has since entered series production, and almost 60 machines are in operation.
Results
Zero-emission electric drive
The TB216E electric excavator is driven by a brushless synchronous motor. This means no harmful exhaust gases are produced during operation. This makes the TB216E ideally suited for use in nature reserves, for work in forests, in residential areas and in enclosed spaces.
With a rated output of 18.5 kW / 25 hp, the electric motor also drives the hydraulic pump effortlessly.
Charging & cable operation
Battery charging and cable operation are carried out via a standard 400 V / CEE 32 A connection.
With suitable adapters, other sockets can also be used. The internally installed chargers provide a charging power of 6 kW.
The excavator’s runtime in battery mode is four hours or more during digging work. Additional cable operation also ensures the option to work around the clock. In both operating modes, the TB216E delivers full excavator performance.
Hydraulic system
The entire hydraulic system was left in its original condition, except for the hydraulic tank. With three hydraulic control circuits, the TB216E enables precise operation and fast work. The 2nd hydraulic control circuit is proportionally controlled, enabling work with the proven Powertilt swivel device and completing the wide range of application options. The 3rd control circuit enables opening the hydraulic quick-coupler plate at 200 bar.
Maintenance
The battery and electric motor are maintenance-free and have a long service life. As a result, the usual diesel engine maintenance is no longer required. Since the hydraulic system was left in its original condition, it can be maintained as usual.
Design
The compact design of the TB216 has been retained, so nothing stands in the way of unrestricted work even on tight construction sites.
Easy operation
The built-in display features intuitive menu navigation, ensuring it remains clear and informative even with a wide range of functions.
Stability
On the TB216E, hydraulic track widening, a long undercarriage and a wide dozer blade ensure stability that is unmatched in its class.
